The Real Rules Of Self-Driving In Sri Lanka
Driving yourself around Sri Lanka is the ultimate way to find hidden beaches, stop at random tea stalls, and travel at your own pace. But renting a car here is not the same as renting in Europe or the US.
There are specific local laws regarding licences, insurance excess, and security deposits that most international booking sites do not tell you about.
Before you book, you need to understand the local rules. If you skip this section, you risk losing your deposit or getting fined.
You Must Convert Your Licence
Your home driving licence and International Driving Permit (IDP) are not enough. You must get a temporary Sri Lankan driving licence. You can do this at the airport or at the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC).
Most rental companies will help you arrange this for a small fee. You will also need to provide a passport copy for the billing process.
The Guarantor Rule
Most local rental agencies require a local guarantor or a second traveller to guarantee the rental. If you are travelling solo, your hotel manager can usually act as your guarantor.
The Refundable Deposit
You must leave a refundable security deposit. For a standard vehicle, expect to pay between LKR 80,000 and LKR 100,000. This is fully refundable when you return the car on time and undamaged.
The LKR 50,000 Insurance Excess
Standard insurance is included, but there is a deductible (excess).
- If you cause an accident and the damage costs less than LKR 50,000, you pay out of pocket.
- If the damage is greater than LKR 50,000, the rental company will claim it against their insurance.
The 100 km Limit
Base daily rates usually include 100 km per day. If you drive more, you will pay extra. The standard rate is LKR 60 per extra kilometre.
If you are doing a big road trip (like Colombo to Ella), ask for an "Unlimited Mileage" upgrade.
Fuel, Tolls And Parking
- Fuel: You receive the car with a certain amount of fuel, and you must return it at the exact same level.
- Tolls and parking: Expressway tolls and parking fees are not included. You pay for these out of pocket during your trip.
