Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Sri Lanka?

Yes. You need both your home country license and an IDP. If your IDP is from the 1968 Vienna Convention, it is recognised automatically. If it is from an older convention, you need to get it endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon in Colombo. That costs roughly LKR 8,500 and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Many rental companies can arrange this for you. Without the correct permit, you cannot legally drive and your insurance will be invalid.

Is car insurance included in the rental price?

Basic third party insurance is included by law. This covers damage you cause to other vehicles but not damage to the rental car itself. Most companies offer optional Collision Damage Waiver for $5 to $15 per day. I strongly recommend taking it. Sri Lankan roads are unpredictable and minor scrapes with tuk tuks and buses are common.

Should I rent a car or hire a driver in Sri Lanka?

For most tourists, hire a driver. Sri Lanka drives on the left. The traffic in cities is chaotic. The hill country roads to Nuwara Eliya and Ella are narrow and winding. Buses overtake on blind corners. A private driver costs only $15 to $25 more per day than self-drive once you add up the IDP fees, parking costs, and the stress you save.

What is the fuel policy?

Most rentals operate full to full. You get the car with a full tank and return it full. If you return it with less fuel, you pay a premium rate, usually 20 to 30 percent above market price. Petrol stations are common in cities but can be 50 to 100 kilometres apart in rural areas. Fill up before driving into the hill country or along the south coast.

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

The minimum age is 21 for standard cars. Most companies require you to have held your home license for at least two years. Drivers aged 21 to 24 may pay a young driver surcharge of $5 to $10 per day. Premium SUVs and luxury cars usually require drivers to be 25 or older.

What happens if I have an accident or breakdown?

Call your rental company's 24/7 hotline immediately. The number is usually printed on the rental agreement. For accidents, you must also call the police on 119 and file a report. Without a police report, your insurance claim will be denied. This applies even for minor scratches. Most companies provide a replacement vehicle within 6 to 12 hours for breakdowns.

Why rent a self-drive car through Wonder of Ceylon

Every self-drive rental company in this directory is a real, licensed Sri Lankan business, ranked by genuine Google review count rather than paid placement. We check each provider for a valid commercial licence and insurance before listing them, and most can help arrange the International Driving Permit recognition you need at Colombo Airport. Compare rates and reviews side by side, then deal with the rental company directly with no booking fees or middlemen.
