How to Choose the Right Transport
Different trips need different transport. Here is how to decide.
Airport Transfer
Best for: Arriving at Bandaranaike Airport
A pre-booked private taxi suits most travellers: the fare is agreed in advance, you know who is picking you up, and there is nothing to negotiate after a long flight.
Car Rental With Driver
Best for: Multi-day tours
You control the itinerary and the driver handles the roads, for as many days as you need.
Van Hire
Coming soonBest for: Groups and families
Vans carry more passengers than a car and have room for everyone's luggage.
Tuk-Tuk
Coming soonBest for: Short trips in town
Quick and easy for short hops within towns. Not suitable for long distances or airport transfers with luggage.
Train
Best for: The scenic hill country
The Kandy to Ella line is slow, cheap and memorable. Reserve seats in advance.
Highway Bus
Best for: Travelling on a budget
Expressway buses are faster than normal buses and cost far less than a private transfer.
How the Main Options Compare
For most travellers, private transfers for long distances and trains or buses for scenic routes work well together.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is an airport taxi in Sri Lanka?
It depends on the distance and the size of the vehicle. Bandaranaike International Airport has official taxi counters in the arrivals hall, and pre-booked providers will quote a fixed fare before you travel. Ask whether the quote includes expressway tolls and waiting time, and compare a few airport taxi providers before you book.
Are taxis available at Colombo Airport at night?
Yes, the arrivals hall has taxi counters for arriving flights, including late ones. If you land at night, a pre-booked transfer means a driver is already waiting and the fare is agreed.
Do transport providers accept WhatsApp bookings?
Many do. WhatsApp is widely used for bookings in Sri Lanka. Send your flight details, destination and number of passengers, and ask for a fixed quote in writing.
Is it safe to hire a private driver in Sri Lanka?
Generally yes. Choose a provider with a record you can check, such as a long history of Google reviews, and confirm before you book that the vehicle is insured and that the driver speaks a language you share.
What is the best transport option for families?
For two to four people, a car or SUV with a driver usually works well. For five to eight people, a van is more comfortable. On longer trips, a private driver lets you stop and change plans as you go, instead of arranging a separate taxi for every leg.
How do I pay for transport in Sri Lanka?
Cash in Sri Lankan rupees is the most widely accepted. Some providers take bank transfers or cards. Each provider profile shows the payment options that provider lists on Google, so check before you travel.
Can I cancel a booking?
Cancellation policies vary by provider. Ask before you book, and keep the answer in writing on WhatsApp or email.
Do I need to tip my driver?
Tipping is not required, but it is appreciated for good service, especially on multi-day hires.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Many providers ask for your flight number so they can follow delays. Ask whether waiting time is included when you book.
Can I book a child seat?
Many providers can arrange one on request, but availability varies. Ask when you book and give your child's age and weight.
