Frequently Asked Questions

View all FAQs
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Sri Lanka?

Yes. You must hold an IDP plus your home country license. Additionally, the IDP must be 'recognized' by the Sri Lanka Department of Motor Traffic — this is a 30-minute process at the airport AA office (cost ~LKR 4,000) or any rental company can arrange it for you. Without recognition, you cannot legally drive.

Is car insurance included in the rental price?

Basic third-party insurance is included by law. Most rental companies offer optional 'Super CDW' (collision damage waiver) for $5-15/day which reduces your liability to zero. We strongly recommend full coverage given Sri Lanka's road conditions and frequent minor scrapes.

Should I rent a car or hire a driver in Sri Lanka?

For most tourists: hire a driver. Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT, has chaotic traffic in cities, narrow mountain roads in the hill country, and frequent buses overtaking blindly. A private driver costs only $15-25/day more than self-drive once you factor in recognition fees, parking, and the stress saved.

What's the fuel policy?

Most rentals operate 'full-to-full' — you receive the car with a full tank and return it full. If you return with less, you're charged a per-litre rate (usually 20-30% above market). Petrol stations are common in cities but sparse in rural areas — fill up before driving the hill country or south coast.

What's the minimum age to rent a car?

21 years for standard cars. Most rental companies require you to have held your home license for at least 2 years. Drivers aged 21-24 may pay a 'young driver surcharge' of $5-10/day. Premium SUVs and luxury cars usually require age 25+.

What happens if I have an accident or breakdown?

Call your rental company's 24/7 hotline (printed in the car). For accidents, you must also file a police report at the nearest station — the rental cannot be replaced or insurance honored without one. Most companies provide a replacement vehicle within 6-12 hours for breakdowns.
